Question for bloggers who review...

When I sat down to write a few reviews tonight, I started thinking...I wonder how the other bloggers out there go about writing their reviews..

Do you type it at the computer? Is it off the top of your head? Do you flip back through the book while reviewing? Etc etc.

Personally, I write little notes to myself throughout the book whenever a thought or opinion pops in my head--that way I won't forget as I read, I can have a horrible memory at times--then I write and edit it on notebook paper first, then type it up and post it.

Anyone care to share? I'm so curious!

Since I'm on the computer all day at work, I don't always want to stare at the screen and think about what to write. I generally mark passages to refer to or quote, and sometimes I write my review out in the notebook I carry with me on the train. Other times, I jot down notes and sit down at the computer to write the review. It depends on my mood.

I wait until I finish the book and then I just write my review at the computer. I try to write reviews as soon as I finish the book so that the emotion is still there

I do what you do. I write down thoughts and ideas (and page numbers) as they come to me. That way later I know which quotes I like and which aspects I'd like to mention.

Hi! I always write it off the top of my head :) with a few flipping through the book - I just love to do it spontaneously but the negative side of this kind of reviewing is that it has to be done immediately or I forget about the story and have trouble writing a review.

Hi Andrea!
Hum that is a good guestion. I myself have a memory of a gold fish (they say it's about 3 seconds). So I have a small piece of paper with every book and write outline type notes. Fragments of facts or feelings I personally have. Like if my heroine is being weak or the hero is a jerk for a moment. You get the picture. Then I just sit and write. I don't write the best reviews and they aren't structured. My style is who would I describe it if I were telling a girlfriend about the book. I try to input the facts that I think are necessarty to get the gist. Cause it is hard not to giveaway too much. Watch your spoilers. I find it hard, but I am sure your readers will appreciate it.
Hope this helps!

I read all the way through the book and wait a day or too so I can sit down to write a review. Sometimes I type them out on the computer or other times I write in a notebook but either way I edit it until I have it the way I want :)

I know Brande, this is the first time I've used spoilers. I hated to do it but I just felt it was necessary while I was writing the review. Hopefully no one will hold it against me :\

Hi Andrea! No worries, we all do. I know for sure I do! I try not to, but it happens ;-)

As soon as I finish reading a book, I write the review. There is no preliminary process for me because I want it all to sound genuine and really for it to be my initial reaction to the book as a whole.

Cool question. Where ever I go I seem to have a book and a notebook so I tend to make notes in the notebook, writing down important page numbers etc, but I also write notes in books, my daughter now is reading some of my old classics and she loves the notes I have left and now she adds her own, it's like a conversation between my younger self and my daughter, through a shared love of books. I tend to write reviews at my laptop usually pretty soon after finishing the book. I make reference to notes and flick back through the book.

I usually log into Wordpress and start writing the review soon after I finish the book. I often save it as a draft and return to it later for editing. Sometimes, I flip through the book for any passages that I marked, or if I want to discuss a particular theme or plot element.

I write my reviews off the top of my head. Since my reviews are usually more my impressions and feelings rather than analytical observations, I just write how I felt about the book. Sometimes I write the review straight after reading the book and other times I wait a day or two if I'm busy. That's a great idea on writing little notes to yourself throughout the book!

I write my reviews of the top of my head too. I'll maybe read the book blurb for a bit of a refresher, and then just start putting down my thoughts on the characters and the plot.

Good question! It really depends on where I am reading at the time...if on the computer, I jot notes on the notepad app....if an actual book, I have a notebook to jot them in. All about the notes (bad memory here too at times!). As far as "writing" the review, definitely comes out better when I am typing. I kind of just go with it...does that make sense?
Thanks for the moment of reflection!

Great question! I've started writing the reviews as soon as I finish the book and I've found that it helps me write better reviews. I used to just write them whenever I felt like it, but by doing it as soon as I finish the book I'm able to still draw in all that emotion that I've had from reading it.

I like this question! I'm the type of person to sit down and begin a review as soon as I finish. I'll generally type up a kind of rough draft so I can get my initial reaction down but I'll wait a day or two before I really sit down and evaluate it. I find I remember more details once I let the story marinate in my brain for a little while. :)
